Gold and Silver in Registered Accounts
Explore physical gold and silver in Canadian registered accounts with Warren Keane, your precious metals consultant. Warren helps you understand the questions around account types, eligible bullion, transfers, custody and ongoing costs before you decide on a next step.
Eligible bullion may be held in certain self-directed registered plans. The plan rules, exact product and receiving provider’s acceptance requirements all matter. Warren can help you organize the information to review; the provider must confirm your proposed account and holding.
Is this the right option for you?
This discussion is for Canadian clients considering physical gold or silver within registered savings. Bring Warren your plan type—such as an RRSP, TFSA, RRIF, LIRA or LIF—and the questions you want answered. Availability depends on the receiving institution, residency, pension jurisdiction and proposed investment; no plan is automatically eligible.
Warren can help you distinguish a registered-account purchase from a personal bullion purchase and prepare for a conversation with the receiving provider. Identify the institution currently holding your plan and confirm the documents, approvals and product acceptance needed before arranging a transfer.
01 Confirm
Identify your plan type and ask the receiving provider to confirm acceptance of the exact coins or bars. Do not assume every gold or silver product can be held in every registered plan.
02 Arrange
Compare the custody arrangement and the full fee schedule before starting a transfer. Confirm who handles the paperwork and how you will be told when funds are available.
03 Review
Review the product, purchase currency, premium and all charges once the account is ready. Keep the trade confirmation and statements with your registered-plan records.
Planning a registered-account bullion purchase
Purchasing gold or silver in a Canadian registered account involves both a bullion transaction and an account administration process. Ask how the provider coordinates account opening, any transfer from an existing plan, product acceptance and trade instructions. Clear responsibilities help you understand what must happen before a purchase can be completed.
Consider the later stages of ownership too. Ask how you would sell the metal, what fees may apply and which procedures govern a withdrawal. Discuss plan-specific tax and withdrawal questions with an appropriately qualified adviser before requesting funds or physical bullion from a registered account.
How it works
- Discuss your plan type, priorities and proposed bullion holding with Warren.
- Work through product choices, custody, costs and the questions to put to the receiving provider.
- Have the provider confirm account and product acceptance. Review the application and any Dealer Authorization Form before signing.
- Arrange the appropriate institution-to-institution transfer or eligible contribution with provider guidance.
- Review a current written quote once funding is available. Retain confirmations and reconcile the holding with your account statement.
Costs and minimums
Review the proposed purchase and complete fee schedule with Warren before starting an account or transfer. Minimums and transaction currency depend on the arrangement. Obtain current requirements in writing rather than treating a program example as a universal minimum.
Ask about purchase premiums, resale spreads, commissions, currency conversion, storage, account administration, transfer-out and withdrawal or delivery charges. Separate fixed fees from charges based on holding value, check for minimum annual charges and confirm how ongoing fees are paid. A public fee schedule may differ from a dealer-specific agreement.
Before you proceed
Plan rules and provider acceptance both matter. Qualifying bullion must meet applicable purity, acquisition and custody conditions; purity alone does not establish eligibility. Metals fluctuate in value. Registered status does not guarantee returns. Do not withdraw funds yourself when intending a direct transfer. Personal delivery may involve a withdrawal or deregistration, taxes and fees, and locked-in plans may restrict access. Seek independent tax and financial advice for your circumstances.
YOUR QUESTIONS, ANSWERED
Frequently asked questions
Can I hold physical gold or silver in an RRSP or TFSA?
Potentially, subject to the plan’s rules, qualified-investment requirements and the provider’s product list. Ask for confirmation for the exact bullion and account before purchasing. CRA notes that providers may impose narrower investment policies than tax law allows.
Can I transfer an existing account?
Ask the receiving provider to arrange the correct direct transfer for your plan. Whether assets transfer in kind or must first be sold depends on acceptance and holdings. Do not assume every transfer is tax-free or that a personal withdrawal is equivalent to a direct transfer; confirm the treatment and any charges.
Who holds the metals and records my ownership?
The chosen account and custody agreements should identify who holds the bullion and how your ownership is recorded. Ask Warren to help you prepare questions about statements, trade confirmations, pooled or segregated storage and whether specific bars are identified. Have the account provider confirm these details in writing for your arrangement.
What insurance or CIPF protection applies?
Ask for the actual vault policy terms and applicable account coverage. CIPF provides limited protection for eligible client property missing after a member firm’s insolvency; it does not protect against falling prices or guarantee investment value. This is different from vault or transit insurance. Coverage depends on eligibility, limits and exclusions.
Can I take my metals home?
Ask the provider before requesting delivery. A release from a registered plan may have tax consequences and costs; LIRA and LIF restrictions can limit withdrawals. Do not assume home-held bullion retains registered-plan status. Obtain a written withdrawal and delivery estimate.
How do I sell and when are proceeds available?
Start by asking Warren to explain the sale process for your registered account. Confirm the current quote, spread, charges, approved instructions and estimated settlement with the provider. Proceeds credited to the registered plan are different from a personal withdrawal; ask separately about withdrawal eligibility, timing and tax treatment.
What should I ask before transferring a registered account?
Confirm the receiving provider, the account type, the proposed bullion products and the required transfer paperwork. Ask both institutions about their process, any transfer charges and expected timing. Have the receiving provider confirm product acceptance before proceeding; do not treat a personal withdrawal as interchangeable with a provider-arranged transfer.
